Ogilvie, Jack - Capt

Capt. Jack Ogilvie, Dallasite, Awarded DFC, Silver Star

Capt. Jack L. Ogilvie of Dallas has been awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action and the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while serving as a veteran combat pilot of a Twelfth Air Force P-47 Thunderbolt in Italy, and Army release disclosed.

Captain Ogilvie is the son of Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Ogilvie of 715 Huntley. In addition, Captain Ogilvie holds the Air Medal and Oak Leaf Clusters.

The citation accompanying the Silver Star stated:

“On Sept. 19, Captain Ogilvie led a four-plane formation of fighters on an armed reconnaissance mission in the Parma-Piacenza area of the Po Valley, Italy. Sighting enemy activity immediately upon entering the area. Captain Ogilvie strafed and heavily damaged five self-propelled heavy guns.

“Upon reaching a heavily defended sector, his flight encountered intense ground fire and in the course of defending his flight by strafing the enemy antiaircraft positions, his plane was heavily damaged and all of his guns rendered useless.

“Although defenseless and with his aircraft almost unmanageable, Captain Ogilvie, upon determining that the other three aircraft were undamaged, displayed unsurpassed gallantry in continuing to lead his formation throughout the entire assigned area.

“Continuing his sweep until he had effected complete reconnaissance and his three comrades had expended their ammunition, the P-47’s destroyed six additional motor trucks, damaged two self-propelled guns and destroyed a third.”

Prior to his Army service, Captain Ogilvie attended Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas and later was employed by the Olmstead-Kirk Paper Company.
