Fifth Army Commander Born in Navarro County

ENNIS, Texas, Dec. 9—Lt. Gen. Lucian K. Truscott, announced as the new commander of the United States Fifth Army in Italy, is a native of Chatfield, Navarro County, and came up from the ranks after enlisting in the First World War. He was a country schoolteacher at the opening of the First World War, was commissioned a cavalry second lieutenant Nov. 13, 1917, and was promoted to first lieutenant a year later. The 49 year old Truscott commanded the Third Division Aug. 9, 1943, in a smash at the north coast of Sicily in co-operation with the United States fleet. The division by-passed the German to storm ashore in their rear.
