Dallas Officer Escapes Death by Narrow Margin

Capt. Richard B. Hawk of the 36th Divison, son of Dr. and Mrs. Eugene B. Hawk, 3833 McFarlin, narrowly escaped death in France near the German border during severe fighting to hold a hill that served as a vantage point for artillery forward observers.

Captain Hawk and his comrades were in a concrete tower when German heavy guns opened fire. Lt. Col. Clifford M. Shaw of Amarillo escaped being hit by shell fragments. Captain Hawk was on a stairway in the tower when another shell fragment tore through the concrete, missing him.
