Mexican War Soldiers from Gallatin, Tennessee

Monument to the soldiers who were killed in the Mexican War, in Gallatin Cemetery

This monument was erected by the citizens of Sumner County to the memory of her patriotic sons who sacrificed their lives in defense of the flag of their country in the war with Mexico in 1846, 1847, and 1848. Glory followed their train and by their death was increased. Their fame is all that survives them. In their graves all their remembrances are buried. Virtuous and esteemed in life, they have become glorious and immortal in death. May our country never feel the want of such heroes.

Briscoe Hatchett, born in Sumner County, Tenn.; died in Camargo, Sept. 24, 1846; age, 21 years.
Joseph Marshall, born in Sumner County, Tenn.; died in Camargo, Sept. 4, 1846; age, 21 years.
Richard Lathan, born in Summer County, Tenn.; died in Jallappa, Sept. 3, 1847; age, 26 years.
Thomas Young, born in Macon County, Tenn.; died in Lomita, Aug. 9, 1846; age, 28 years.
King Carr, born in Sumner County, Tenn.; died in Camargo, Sept. 10, 1846; age, 23 years.
Booker H. Dalton, born in Sumner County, Tenn.; killed in Battle of Monterey, Sept. 21, 1846; age, 30 years.
Thomas E. Harris, born in Smith County, Tenn.; died in Camargo, Nov. 8, 1846; age, 27 years.
George Barker, born in Sumner County, Tenn.; died at his father's in Sumner County, Tenn., on Dec. 12, 1848, of a disease contracted in service of the U. S. Army; age, 21 years.
William Gambell, belonged to Capt. Hatton's Company; born in Sumner County, Tenn.; died at his uncle's in Sumner County, Tenn., about Nov. 16, 1846, of a disease contracted in the service of the U. S. Army; age, 21 years.
