Hopper, Charles M. - Lieut

Lieut. Chas. M. Hooper, of Company N., prisoner had been detached from the main body with a part of his command, and was endeavoring to cross the river, finally effecting his purpose, but was here surrounded and taken. Lieut. Hooper, when asked to throw down his arms, said: "Californians never surrender!" He was at once pinioned and disarmed. He was married, and lived at 28 north Eighth street, where he kept a trimming store. He leaves a wife and children. He was thirty-five years of age, and had a stepson in the regiment who was taken prisoner.
