Thompson, Edward - Capt.
80-YEAR-OLD VETERAN CRUSHED BETWEEN CARS.
[illegible] Employe[sic] Believed to Be Dying.
Crushed between two trolley cars at Twentieth and Arch streets last night, Captain Edward Thompson, and 80-year-old veteran of the Civil War, received injuries which will probably cause his death. He is in the Medico-Chirurgical Hospital suffering from a fractured skull, crushed chest, internal injuries and broken arms.
Before the aged veteran lapsed into unconsciousness after receiving the last rites of the Catholic Church he said to Dr. Cohen, a physician; "I've been in some pretty tight places, doctor, and I will get out of this as I have before."
Captain Thompson was returning to his home, at 112 North Woodstock street, from his work at the Schuylkill Arsenal, Twenty-fifth street and Washington avenue. He started to cross Arch street, and, seeing a trolley approaching, halted. Another car came along on the opposite track and the aged war veteran was caught between the two. He was hurried to the hospital in an automobile.
During the Civil War Captain Thompson, who led the Sixty-ninth Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, was shot in the head. The bullet still remains in his skull.
