Donovan, Peter
Peter Donovan was son of Dennis Donovan, born in Ireland, died Nov. 13, 1911, aged 72 years. He came as a boy to Greenfield where he made his home and became a well known and much respected citizen. He enlisted in the navy July 25, 1862, serving on the "Rhode Island" and was aboard that vessel when it attempted to tow the famous "Monitor" from Hampton roads to Charleston, but which was sunk in a storm off Cape Hatteras; discharged September 3, 1863; a member of Edwin E. Day Post [GAR]. He was employed at the John Russell Cutlery and was for many years superintendent of the old Tool Shop.
